Water Damage in Gilcrest: What We Actually See Here

Gilcrest has a water problem that almost no other town in Colorado has to explain to a restoration crew: the water comes up from underneath. Over the past two decades the shallow alluvial aquifer beneath this stretch of the South Platte valley has risen high enough to inundate basements outright, salt up farm ground and flood septic systems. Residents have been dealing with it since at least 2014, and it was serious enough that the Colorado Division of Water Resources and the Water Conservation Board funded a formal Gilcrest/LaSalle Pilot Project, with the Colorado Geological Survey publishing a hydrogeologic characterization of the area.

The reporting out of that period is blunt. The high water table has inundated and destroyed basements, raised soil salinity to the point that potatoes rotted in the field, and left homeowners bailing year after year. State-level study concluded there is no quick or easy fix. So when we walk into a Gilcrest basement with standing water and no broken pipe, we are not surprised, and we know to look at groundwater rather than guessing at plumbing.

The town itself is small and old — roughly 1,000 residents, founded in 1907 when W.K. Gilcrest bought up the failing townsite of Nantes along the Union Pacific line, incorporated in 1912. That means modest early-1900s and mid-century farm houses with shallow basements, block or poured walls without modern waterproofing, and drain tile that either never existed or has silted shut.

When the Aquifer Is the Leak

Groundwater intrusion behaves differently from a burst pipe and has to be treated differently. It arrives slowly, comes through cold joints and floor cracks along the slab perimeter, keeps coming for weeks, and re-wets anything you dried yesterday. Drying a basement while the water table is up is wasted effort unless the water is being managed at the same time. Old Farm Houses, Septic Systems, and Salt

A lot of Gilcrest-area homes sit on acreage with septic, and the same rising groundwater that fills basements also floods leach fields. When a field cannot drain, the system backs up into the house, and that is contaminated water requiring containment, removal of porous materials and verified drying rather than a wet vac. Homes on wells and septic in this valley should treat any slow drain or soggy field in a wet year as an early warning, not a nuisance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Water Damage in Gilcrest

Why is my Gilcrest basement wet when no pipe has broken?

Almost certainly groundwater. The shallow aquifer under the Gilcrest area has risen over the past two decades to the point that it inundates basements and floods septic systems, which is why the state funded the Gilcrest/LaSalle Pilot Project and the Colorado Geological Survey studied the hydrogeology here. Water enters through the slab-wall cold joint and floor cracks rather than from a fixture, and it keeps coming.

Can you dry a basement if the water table is still high?

We can, but only with a plan that accounts for continuing intrusion, which usually means managing the water while the structure dries. Otherwise you are drying materials that get re-wet by morning. During the inspection we will tell you honestly whether restoration will hold now or whether drainage work should come first. Paying to dry a basement twice helps nobody.

My septic backed up after a wet spring. Is that related?

Often, yes. High groundwater around Gilcrest has been documented flooding septic systems along with basements. A saturated leach field cannot accept flow, so the system surcharges back into the lowest fixtures. That is category three water. It needs containment, removal of affected porous materials and verified drying — not disinfectant and a fan — because of the contamination risk.

Do older Gilcrest farm houses need special attention?

They do. Gilcrest dates to 1907 and much of the housing is early-1900s or mid-century, with shallow basements, unwaterproofed walls and drain tile that has silted shut or never existed. Moisture wicks through masonry and into framing and floor systems where you cannot see it. We measure the material itself instead of relying on how the room feels.
